PRESENTERS
Leilani Elliott from Proteknon Consulting Group is a senior human rights and child protection specialist with 14 years of professional experience in a range of humanitarian settings (conflict, natural disaster, migration and displacement), along with transitional justice and development contexts. In 2015, she was awarded a PhD (Law) for her legal-ethnographic research on Human Rights-Based Approaches to Matters Involving Children, and in 2006 she earned her MA (Development Studies) focusing on the impacts of armed conflict on women and children, both from the University of Melbourne. Leilani is an experienced qualitative researcher, writer, and trainer, with proven technical and programmatic competencies across a range of thematic areas in child protection and safeguarding. Leilani previously worked as a sessional academic at the University of Melbourne, and co-founded the East Timorese NGO Ba Futuru.
Claire Whiting from Proteknon has over 12 years of experience as a humanitarian practitioner delivering technical, advisory, coordination and senior management roles in humanitarian, early recovery and development contexts with Non Government and United Nation Organisations and in close collaboration with national and local authorities. A child protection, participation and rights specialist by education and training, Claire broadened out into humanitarian and inter-agency coordination, leading inter-agency coordination and advocacy efforts on behalf of INGO’s and vis-à-vis host governments/actors and international organisation counterparts – at national, regional and international levels. Claire has lived and worked in 12 countries globally. She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Humanitarian Diplomacy from The Diplo Foundation and IFRC, an MSc by distinction in Childhood Studies from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA First Class Hons in Psychology form the University of Bristol.
Hannah Thompson from Proteknon has 18 years of experience as a manager, technical adviser, and consultant in supporting programmes in complex emergency, natural disaster, and developing country contexts. Hannah has worked in 22 countries, and lived in 14. Her work has concentrated on child protection, sexual and gender-based violence, and education. She works according to the principles of collaboration, participation, equality, and respect for diversity. This applies to the way she treats colleagues and team members as well as her approach to clients and affected populations. Hannah has a Masters in Anthropology and Development – with a focus on kinship and gender – from the London School of Economics.
MODERATOR
Susan Wisniewski is co-lead of the CPMS Working Group of the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action and Child Protection in Emergencies Advisor with Terre des hommes (Tdh) Lausanne, currently based in Jordan. Before joining Tdh, Susan worked on child protection and education programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Cote d’Ivoire, Chad and Uganda. She has 15 years of experience in humanitarian response working with international NGOs. Susan holds a master’s degree in political science from the Graduate Institute of Development and International Studies in Geneva and is completing a master’s in educational psychology.
